Blessed with the topography and environment of the Sanriku Rias coast, the fishing industry has prospered since ancient times because of the fresh and abundant variety of marine products. On the other hand, due to the influence of this terrain, a lot of damage was caused by the multiple tsunamis that hit this region, such as the 1896 Meiji Sanriku tsunami, the 1933 Sanriku tsunami, and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Despite the recurring threat of tsunamis, this town continues to coexist with nature, while teaching about tsunami disaster prevention. Through the storyteller experience, you can learn about the threat of natural disasters and the meaning of preparing for disasters. You will also learn about the value of the sea while visiting the fish market with a local specialty guide.
